Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such drugs must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
