French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the UK.

This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the President urging him to support the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.

French security forces have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.

French authorities have rarely acted to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered too great a risk to both officers and civilians.

"It is essential that we implement these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."

Now, a French maritime police representative says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.

Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible technique to snarl the engines of the boats.

This determination to intervene at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief change towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which ceased when the former government official left office.

That was highlighted in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.

Now French officials will again be allowed to stop boats before they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.

Strong winds are currently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking methods to adapt to evade interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.

UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
