Per new study, the median earner in the UK would have to work half a century of income to reach the wealth level of the richest 10% in the country.
Expanding Wealth Gap Over Time
The analysis reviewed net worth statistics covering the recent health crisis years and found that in the pre-financial crisis era, it would have required 38 years of median full-time earnings to enter the richest segment of the financial hierarchy.
An economic expert part of the analysis commented: "Wealth gaps in Britain are now so large that a regular employee saving all their earnings during their working years would continue to be incapable to reach the top of the economic scale."
Measuring the Financial Disparity
The research revealed that the difference between the assets of the average person and an individual in the wealthiest decile was one million pounds in the pre-crisis period, but had expanded to 1.3 million pounds in inflation-adjusted terms by recent times.
The analyst added: "These gaps are doubly concerning as wealth mobility in Britain is restricted – individuals who begin life wealthy tend to stay wealthy, and vice versa."
Proportional Economic Disparity
Despite the financial disparity expanding in actual numbers, the share of complete net worth in the UK held by the wealthiest families – termed "relative wealth inequality" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s era," as stated in the analysis.
Over this timeframe, total wealth in the UK surged from triple the yearly economic output, to nearly seven and a half times.
Contributors of Financial Divide
Referred to as "unearned" increases, by means of growing real estate costs and variations in retirement fund assessments, were the key contributors of the growing financial disparity over the past decade, per the report.
These increases generally flowed to senior citizens with real estate, the study demonstrates – worsening the intergenerational wealth divide.
Age-Based Financial Divides
The typical financial disparity between people in their early 30s and those in their early 60s grew by more than 100% in real terms, from £135k in 2006-08, to 310 thousand pounds.
Geographic Differences
Furthermore, the study revealed stark area-based disparities, with the average level of net worth in 2020-22 standing at 290 thousand pounds in the southeastern region, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, as opposed to £110,000 in the northeastern region.
COVID Era Effects
Throughout the COVID period, when millions of workers were covered under the public-funded employment protection, and Covid shutdowns limited opportunities for spending, the statistics indicate many households were capable of accumulating, enhancing their financial standing.
Higher-income households fared much better, though. "The average household in the poorest fifth saw their available funds increase by just £80 throughout the health crisis (2019-20 to 2021-22), roughly identical to the two years pre-pandemic. On the other hand, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their cash reserves increase by £4,200," the report finds.
